Hi there my Friends at HairDesignerTV.com and fellow stylists,
Just finished a big photoshoot in NYC doing 18 looks over two days. WOW! The fabulous Photographer Roberto Ligresti and other members of the team (including the fabulous client) all made the same statement, that they were amazed at how fast I am in creating a finished camera ready style. Which stopped me in my tracks with deep reflection.
If you were to watch me in a studio, with no audience or camera to worry about, I am very quiet and focused. I take time to think through the prospective style and then go for it. In addition I take time for a hundred reality checks in the mirror, asking myself is this working? I realize that my study of strong technique over the last 40 years is the reason why I am efficient. Just like salon work, time in the photo studio is all about time, money and great results.
A strong system produces a result that can be measured in time and repeated.
For example these images from another shoot are all bouffants, each with a relaxed silhouette.
So this is my check list before I even design. (see below)
Viv’s reality check
- Which styling product will best support the end look? I do a product test in the nape of the neck to assess performance.
- What would be the best setting method, and what texture do I want?
- How do I make the face oval?
- How soft and feminine or strong should the final look be?
- What is the fashion statement?
The above creative process gives me a frame work to then design from, so then I can think technically about my approach
- What type of back combing should I do?
- Where is the focal point?
- What is the shape (see example below of silhouettes)
- How structured or undone should the final look be?
Then I go for it with tones of reality checks along the way. I am always asking is this working? If not what changes should I make?
This week I will be presenting my 3 day work shop at my studio in the Hamptons to a very small group if you are interested in joining us there is one place left.
