Painted hair.

If you hear a voice within you say ‘you cannot paint,’

then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.

Hi there my Friends,

Taking a trip down memory lane, when I worked with the lovely talented lady Cindy French (who colored the style above using a free hand painting method with artist brush) When I met Cindy by her own confession was a safe colorist doing basic commercial work.  I remember thinking Cindy there is so much more inside of you, I have the key to opening your creativity and the rest was history. I told her to study art, nature, fashion patterns and prints, and to always ask the question; how can I translate this into hair? I took Cindy to Italy and remember she was lost in a bookstore for hours exploring art and fashion books she came out with bags of books to inspire. This marked the beginning of a wonderful journey.

When I was a stylist/teacher and the Artistic Director At Vidal Sassoon’s in London, I was the lucky one, as the colorist who I worked with on a very regular bases was the Iconic Queen of Color Annie Humphrey.  Annie was the creator of so many of the amazing color techniques we use today.  I would design a hair cut and Annie and I would brain storm ideas and she would bring to life the cut with color and dimension it was always WOW!  What was important was cut came first and color came second so that the colorist could be inspired by the shape.

Annie was the inventor of Finger painting slices, Ombre back combing and color  to name just a few.

Open you mind today and look at nature for inspiration, get our your mannequin head and play, check out our tutorials in Classic HDTV for great color from Brian Redman

  1. I’m so inspired to get my paints out! I haven’t let creative out to play for way too long! I’ paint on paper but am now inspired to paint on hair! There is such beauty everywhere – I will remember to stop and really look close.
