On the road to NAHA

Jason Nash Artistic Director for Douglas J Serene Barlond Nominated NAHA stylist

Hi there My Friends, I have been fortunate to work with the team at Douglas J for many years and it thrills me to see the art team stylists and students grow and evolve.  The Douglas J commitment to education is an inspiration.  Especially when it pays off on the road to NAHA.  I asked  Serene Barlond from Douglas J salon about her journey to NAHA  and nomination for New comer Stylist of the year. Screen Shot 2016-07-13 at 12.23.23 AMWhen I decided to completely change my career path and follow my true passion, I wanted to work somewhere that would let me express my creativity. Working for Douglas J is more than just a job. I am surrounded by amazing talent and I have been given the opportunity to really develop my own talent. To me, working here means being part of a business that strives for and reaches excellence every day.

I drew my inspiration from a few different TV shows. I started watching the National Geographic series Vikings, and HBO’s Game of Thrones, and the intricate braid patterns the characters wore really caught my eye. I created a sculptural collection with a rugged, royal feel. I was lucky enough to have my sisters model for me. They were both so open minded and had great hair to work with. I changed my idea for color a few times, and my sister let me experiment with the wonderful help of the super talented Douglas J colorists. I have never worked on the set of a high fashion photoshoot, and I don’t think I have ever been that nervous in my life! It was so exciting to see my ideas become real and beautiful. My mentors TJ and Jason really helped me work through my nerves and polish my ideas. The results were posted at 1:00 on a Wednesday. I refreshed my phone so many times to get the results to load, and when it did, all I saw was my name. The emotion was overwhelming. Luckily, my mom was at my house, and I was able to celebrate with her. My coworkers were so excited for me and so supportive as well. I am so excited for the awards ceremony!

Douglas J’s program is different from other salons. My Advanced Academy training after cosmetology school really trained my eye to see the shapes and proportions that helped me develop my collection. It was the hardest part of my training but it was also the most rewarding.

Serene’s thoughts about training on HairDesignerTV.com  “I learned to be patient and open minded through vivs training. Practice is important and failing is ok as long as you keep trying. She trained my eye to see proper proportions, and I learned how to build shape and create depth. It is an amazing course!!”

To anyone who wants to enter NAHA, go for it! I haven’t been a stylist for that long, and it is so rewarding to be nominated in a competition of this caliber. You will never know if you don’t try, so put your whole heart into it.

We at HairDesignerTV wish Serene all the best at NAHA, in our eyes she is already a winner.

Best Wishes Vivienne Mackinder Founder of HairDesignerTV.com
