Should I Specialize in Haircutting?

Hello my Fellow Hairstylists, Friends, and Members of Hairdesignertv,

I have been trained in color, however, my specialty is haircutting, and the question that I am asked often is..

“Should I specialize in haircutting?”

As our color technology advances rapidly, I understand why this is such a big decision to make. The cost of color services are significantly higher and you are afraid you will miss out on the creativity. I get it. There are, unfortunately, no “cut and dry” answers. (Pun intended.) However, your income is up to you! You can make as much or as little as you want, you can learn how to increase your speed to perform more haircuts in a specific time frame, and creativity is found in continued education. However, what may be good for one person may not be good for another.

I can only speak for myself when I say that specializing has served me well. I have received world renowned education and I am now the producer of Hairdesignertv. People travel all over the world to receive education from me. How did I get here? I took my specialization seriously. I put all of my focus and energy into my craft. I worked very hard to become an expert.

I may not be able to give you a direct answer as to what is best for you, but I do have a little advice and, maybe, you can figure out the answer to that question!

“Love and passion for an area of specialization is a true gift!”

Firstly, you have to have a real love and passion for cutting! Love and passion for an area of specialization is a true gift, and, with this gift, you can study to become an outstanding, in demand expert.

“General knowledge and speciality knowledge, both, have value in the marketplace.”

Secondly, specializing is no different than a specialty doctor verses a general practitioner.  General knowledge and speciality knowledge both have value in the marketplace.  However, there is a huge difference in price point and value of a specialist expert. A specialist has invested more time developing a higher standard of skills. So, if you decide to specialize, go at it with all your heart! You want to be the best! Otherwise, why specialize?
I hope this helps with any fears that any of you may be facing with this decision. I challenge you to get out there and test your love, passion, and creativity with more education! That’s the only way one can truly know for sure!
